World Day Against Child Labour

The ILO launched World Day Against Child Labour in 2002, after which it is annually celebrated to raise awareness about the plight of child labourers worldwide. The theme of World Day Against Child Labour 2020 is ‘COVID-19 – Protect children from child labour now, more than ever.’
The Indian Handmade Carpet Industry is the first industry who voluntarily come forward against the Child Labour in the year 1995 and to self-discipline its Members, Carpet Export Promotion Council introduce a Code of Conduct on Child Labour. Carpet Exporters contributed 0.25% of their export proceeds towards the Child Welfare Fund in the year 1995-96 and 1996-97. Council initiated various activities for the welfare of the children, artisans and their families in the major carpet belt area from the above fund i.e. Non-Formal Education through reputed NGOs with assured stipend, distribution of dress, bags, Medicare Facilities to weavers and their families. Presently Council is running 8 schools.
To control the Child Labour issue Council is regularly doing registration of looms and also monitoring the looms by surveillance through an independent agency.
All the child labour activities are duly approved by the National Level Steering Committee headed by Development Commissioner (Handicrafts). The committee is having representatives of ILO, UNICEF, NGOs & Trade.
Shri Siddh Nath Singh, Chairman, CEPC mentioned that due to COVID-19 though Council could not organize any awareness workshop or Seminar, but again reiterate on this “World Day Against Child Labour” that Council is totally committed for complete elimination of the Child Labour in all forms. Chairman, CEPC appeal and requests all Members for their support on Child Labour elimination.
The scenario in India has been changed. India has prospered in big way and there are hardly any child labour in carpet sector and if there are any, Council is taking very strict measure to figure out and eradicate the same.
